How society captures us can play a large role in what we think of ourselves. There is a saying, " If you do not know who you are, everyone will try to tell you. "

Introduction
In the recent years, the question of the identity as viewed by society has lingered significantly in my head as I have gone through college. Often times, the black women in America is the weakest, vulnerable and disrespected person in America. Having full knowledge of this for a long time, I decided I would take my life in a different direction, and make the shift to becoming the “Not so (fill in the blank).. Black girl”.
I began to really focus on who I wanted to be, what i wanted to leave on this world. I figured the only way to redefine the worlds definition of who I am Is to know and say… “Who Am I” In the recent years one of the ways I begin to do that was by being invested in myself and the community. At 16 I was a company member of NIA dance troupe and afrikan dance company for almost Two years. I remembered the feeling community, and sense of belonging and a connection through exposure to the Afrikan culture. In my senior year of high school was invested in my craft as a dancer. I received the Virginia Jefferson Book Award and the Senior Dance Choreography Award. I graduated from Boston Arts Academy With an Honors Degree in Ballet and Modern dance. These two experiences reminded me of the sense of definition and control of the image that I had of myself.
For my project I researched defining self as a black women in america and turns out i'm not alone. Majority of black women in america, given the mixed Images and ideas from the media, have a hard time answering the question who am i, and so they have turned to many things, My project focuses on the positive outlets that help us define self, and Women and figures who also have provided positive literature, Entertainment, and activities during the many decades of the battle for equality in america. One of the ways that this was done was on a vision board, For my project, Organised a session to make a Vision Board with Different generations of women in My family. We also Together Composed a Collection on of Poems, Art, and Question that Address the Identity of Black women in America. .
